Sunday

6:30 AM

We woke at 5 and began to get dressed (not an easy thing to do in a tent) and then we went to breakfast. Lots of hot cocoa and coca tea warmed me right up. Last night was not a good sleep for any us just because of how cold it was. My throat is still sore but after drinking about 8 cups of hot liquids I am much better, and ready to tackle be hardest part of the hike.

8:44 AM

I am currently resting on a rock on the side of a mountain, taking in the glorious view surrounding me. Our group is a little separated. A few are farther behind than others. It is very easy to become spread out because every tolerates the physical strain differently. There are also a lot of other groups of people around us (there are 70 Inca Trail/Salkantay Trek tour companies in Cusco alone). I have no idea how much longer I have to go, but looking down at what I've already conquered is motivating me!

I was sitting and waiting for some of the group when Haver caught up to me and told me that before we were to go to the mountains, we needed to purify ourselves. The group gathered and then he took a small vile out of his pocket and poured a few drops on my hands and told me to breathe deeply. It was a nice smell, sort of a combination of cinnamon and mint. Breathing it in really cleared my sinuses. He then told us it was condor urine (which I highly doubt is true). It was a fun tradition nonetheless. I am now again sitting, catching my breath. It is completely silent in this small valley area with no one else around, and so incredibly peaceful.

We have made it to the peak!! I am so exhausted, but so proud of myself. What an incredible feeling. We're only trekking downhill from here so it should be smooth sailing!

It is very common to build a rock towers as an offering to the mountain god. As you can see, lots of people who make it to the top build them!

It has been so wonderful hiking down. We are now at lunch, the sun is shining, and I am happy!

6:23 PM

Wow, the last few hours have been insane. The constant downhill is actually very exhausting. What a change from what I thought before. We finally got to the camp. Soos hasn't been able to hike, so when we got here we sent a horse out for her and our guide. Now we're at our happy hour (popcorn & tea) and trying to wind down from this crazy day.

8:14 PM

Time for bed already. I'm already more comfortable compared to last night because the temperature is at least 10 degrees warmer! SO thankful!
